Team BPS Orientation and a Question

We mentioned Team BPS a little while ago on the blog and in the meantime we’ve had a bunch of parents email us with questions and comments about being young parents in Boston.

So, we thought we’d highlight Team BPS once again.

If you’d like to act as a parent ambassador to the Boston Public Schools system and have a chance to advocate for the needs of families in City education, you should consider attending Team BPS‘ next orientation on June 22nd at Boston City Hall.

Date: June 22nd

Time: 12-1:30pm

Location: Piemonte Room, 5th Floor of Boston City Hall

More info and registration here

QUESTION: How likely are you to enroll your children in BPS? What makes you likely/unlikely to do so?

So call me naive but I honestly thought that the swans in the Public Garden flew south for the winter.  However, my little world is being shattered as I am informed that they are kept in the Franklin Park Zoo during the winter.

With that said, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Boston Parks Commissioner Antonia Pollak and Four Seasons Hotel Boston General Manager Bill Taylor will welcome Boston’s most famous waterfowl back for the season during the 22nd Annual Return of the Swans to the Public Garden on Tuesday, May 4.

The festivities will begin with entertainment at 11 a.m.

After wintering at the Franklin Park Zoo, Romeo and Juliet (also didn’t know they had names) will once again reside in the Public Garden Lagoon. The swans will be returned to the lagoon following a parade that begins at 11:30a.m. at the Beacon and Charles Street corner of the park near the Make Way for Ducklings statue. Led by a brass band, the parade will continue to the George Washington Statue at the Commonwealth Avenue/Arlington Street entrance, over the pedestrian bridge, and end on the Boylston
Street side of the lagoon for the official Return of the Swans ceremony at 11:45 a.m.
The accompanying entertainment program, sponsored in part by The Friends of The Public Garden and beginning at 11 a.m., will include a brass band, face painters, and readings of Make Way for
Ducklings led by the Boston Park Rangers. The Four Seasons Hotel Boston will provide refreshments and in-kind sponsor H.P. Hood LLC will offer tasty product samples.

So there you go folks…see the the swans return to their rightful place.

Lastly, if anyone knows how they prevent the swans from running away/walking into traffic your insight would be greatly appreciated.  I asked Devin but he didn’t know…shocker.

Everyday is a Family Day…Important News from the BPS!!!

It is Wednesday ONEin3 community, and usually on Wednesdays I nanny, in the North End, for two very adorable toddlers.  I love families, especially the families I nanny for.  Although ONEin3 tends to not focus a ton on young families (even though many parents are in our age range), we really want to do a better job to provide this group with resources.  With that said any suggestions of content you would like to see or any young parents that would like to write for the blog, please let us know!!

To start us off, I have a very excited announcement from the Boston Public Schools…so enjoy!!!

In May, the BPS Office of Welcome Services, together with Y/BPS, will launch this BPS Ambassador Team (Team BPS).  Team BPS is a Call to Action for BPS parents, alumni, educators and civic/corporate partners to help spread the good word about the many good things happening in our schools and for our students. We have 49 ambassadors signed up thus far and our goal is to top 100 by the beginning of May, with 200 folks on board as we launch the new school year in the fall.

Ambassadors will make a commitment to support BPS twice a year (or more if you like) in any of the following ways: speaking at a workshop or event for parents considering BPS, handing out information on Visibility Day in the fall to parents registering for any BPS grade, taking part in print media opportunities (writing a letter to the editor for example) and social media methods to get the word out (listservs, blogs), talking informally to parents considering BPS on the ballfield, outside a swim class, you name it.

Applicants simply need to fill out the form at this link:  In exchange, ambassadors are provided with a short but important orientation, official “Team Wear,” and quarterly (but optional) networking and learning opportunities with guest speakers such as the Superintendent, School Committee members, and more.

I hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful weather and please check back tomorrow for a very amazing podcast!

Y/BPS Important Dates and Deadlines

School Preview Time is going on now through January 22. Open houses are being held by all elementary, middle and high schools in the district. Go see the school in action, ask important questions, and consider which schools are right for your family.

Y/BPS Workshops are taking place throughout the winter. Like Family Information Sessions, these are neighborhood meetings led by a Y/BPS Project Manager aimed at helping you answer your questions about registration, the lottery, school assignments, the waiting lists, and educational choices in the future. E-mail us at to set up a workshop.

First round of school registration begins January 4, 2010 for all children entering kindergarten (K0, K1 or K2), grade 6 or grade 9.  Register by the end of round one on February 5th. Come prepared with a list of at least 5-7 schools to rank at registration

Attention Parents: Help Y/BPS Serve You!

Y/BPS is a collaboration between YMCA and the Boston Public Schools, which aims to connect young parents to current BPS parents and educate them on the BPS system, the lottery, their local schools and more. If you have children approaching school age, you should definitely check out what they do so you can make an informed decision on your child’s education.

In order to improve their operations and make themselves stronger for you, Y/BPS has a survey they’d like you to take. To sweeten the pot, they’ve thrown in a raffle for a $50 gift certificate to Target. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Y/BPS’s survey – TAKE IT!
